What are double glazed windows?
Double glazed windows are fittings manufactured with hard-wearing unplasticised polyvinyl chloride that use two panes of glass instead of one, with a layer of argon gas designed to keep your home more energy-efficient. These windows are now widely fitted in new homes thanks to their long-lasting properties, easy maintenance and excellent heat insulation. Styles and designs can vary greatly, including wood-effect patterns and modern colour palettes.
How can I tell if my double glazing needs replacing?
Although long-lasting, double glazing does eventually need to be replaced when it is no longer performing its task of insulating the home. Clear sign of wear, such as warped windows or discolouration, are an indication that might be time to fit replacements. Unusually high energy bills and noticeable drafts can also be clues that your double glazing is no longer up to scratch.
What does double glazing do?
Double glazing improves heat insulation, increases home energy efficiency and also reduces sound from outside. The gap between the two panes of glass is not sealed as a vacuum. The purpose of double glazing is to reduce the heat transfer process that takes place between the interior and exterior of a home. The air in this gap is dried, and argon is used as further barrier for heat transfer. The inner pane of glass acts as further protection to heat loss and also helps reduce sound infiltration.
Can you reseal double glazed windows?
Resealing double glazed windows can be done by the original installers, however, this process does not guarantee efficiency and will not provide the same longevity that replacement windows will. Fully replaced double glazed windows will come with warranties, guaranteeing the work and materials used for the job.
How much does double glazing save per year?
Installing double glazing could lead to yearly savings of £120-155 for detached homes, £80-110 for semi-detached homes, £65-85 for mid-terrace homes and £50-70 for bungalows, according to government estimations based on typical gas heating costs.
How long does double glazing last?
Depending on the build quality of the window, weather conditions and the degree to which they have been maintained, double glazing can last over 20 years. The lifespan of double glazing can be extended by regular maintenance, including wiping down with soapy water and keeping the hinges and mechanisms well oiled.
Is secondary glazing better than double glazing?
Secondary glazing is considerably cheaper than double glazing, however it is much less efficient and does not offer the same sound and heat insulation. Although working with a similar concept, no seal is used in secondary glazing, which means that there is no difference in air pressure between the two panes of glass, leading to easier heat transfer. Whilst secondary glazing is considerably quicker to install, it does not provide the same benefits as double glazing.

“Just had bi-fold doors fitted, along with 2 new windows (one of which involved a wall removed to fit a larger window). Allerton Windows have been totally fantastic from the day we first went to their showroom in Bootle where we spoke to Paul who pleasantly informed us on all the options and then said he would e-mail a quote (which he duly did). We then had a survey visit from Tony and then a date was set for the installation. At every stage they have been informative (no hard sell at all). The work was carried out on the day by Ian and Daz, they were brilliant and a credit to the company. They were so helpful on the day, from helping move units to get the bi- fold doors through the garage. Nothing was touch trouble and they cleaned up after them all day long ”
“We have recently had new windows, porch, front and garage doors fitted by Allerton Windows. They did an excellent job and the works exceeded our expectations. They are very professional and did not let us down at any stage. We would definitely recommend them and will most definitely use them again. They do not have a hard sales approach, rather they simply want to do the best job for you at a competitive price. They employ very hardworking tradesmen. Overall this was an exceptional job from a very well run company. We are absolutely delighted with our experience with Allerton Windows and we highly recommend them.”
“Excellent job carried out by Allerton Windows. I have previously had my windows and front door fitted by Allerton Windows and was really pleased with their high standards so they were the obvious choice for my kitchen/dinner extension. Paul the Quantity Surveyor has provided me with an honest and reasonable quote that was fully itemised. Right from the initial consultation I was provided with excellent quality customer service and I was given a timescale for completion that they kept to. If there were any minor ‘snags’ or issues (as will always be the case in any building work) they were happy to address asap. Really happy with the work.”
“Recently chose to have the windows fitted and just had them finished. From the beginning, they were brilliant Tony the owner measured and completed a quote on the same day. I was undecided what to go for and Tony offered honest advice regarding colour and style which were different from my original thoughts and now the work is completed we are absolutely delighted. Our home has been transformed from looking tired and old to bright and modern. I love the grey suggested and the additions suggested by Tony. The guys who fitted were polite, friendly and hardworking and we actually enjoyed the transition. The whole team know what they are doing and the service was extremely professional from start to finish. We would highly recommend! Thank you!”
